Christmas Day bombing attacks in Nigeria

Dec 25, 2011 No Comments by

Christmas Day, a special day in the year we  share with our loved ones to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, this morning  about 32 innocent citizens in Suleja, (outside Abuja) Nigeria were killed in bomb attacks. As Nigerians we’re completely devastated to hear such disturbing news.

St Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla was packed when the bomb exploded outside, a radical Muslim sect claimed responsibility for five attacks which struck the nation’s north-east today. The sect known as Boko Haram is responsible for at least  495 killings alone this year.

Boko Haram whose name in Hausa means ” western education is sinful” want to impose islamic sharia law across the country which is split between christians and muslims.  The president, Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incident “unfortunate” but said Boko Haram would “not be [around] for ever. It will end one day.”

We feel today’s attack is the height of irresponsibility for anyone to do, especially on Christmas Day, we are absolutely devastated and our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones.

Despite the terrible news today, we wish all of our readers and fellow Nigerians a very Merry Christmas.
